Best of 2009 Travel: Part 4 of 10 - Mass MoCA Sol Lewitt Retrospective

Photobucket

Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art - North Adams, Massachusetts

Though it opened in late 2008, I only got to see the new Sol Lewitt retrospective in the summer of 2009. 105 of Lewitt’s wall drawings fill an entire building (three whole floors) and will be on display for 25 years. The breadth of drawing and painting techniques is wide and the arrangement is a more or less chronological survey of Lewitt’s work.

Many of the drawings are expansive, candy-colored delights. While some of the work at Mass MoCA isn’t easily accesible to the average viewer, Lewitt’s work can be enjoyed by just about anyone. It would be a great introduction to contemporary art for children as well. Don’t miss the short video that chronicles the creation of the drawings by artists and Yale University students, set to a hypnotic score by contemporary composer Steven Reich.
