Best of 2009 Travel: Part 3 of 10 - Buttermilk Falls State Park
Having spent the past five years in southern California I’ve greatly missed autumns filled with crunchy leaves and brisk temperatures. I was able to get my fix in a variety of places from the Green Mountain National forest in Vermont to a cider mill in central New York, but my hands down favorite autumn adventure this year was hiking the trails through Buttermilk Falls State Park outside of Ithaca.
A winding trail with stone steps is carved into the gorge where numerous waterfalls cascade in various shapes as the creek descends. Each fall seems to impress more than the last and the yellowed forests provided the perfect backdrop for the rushing water. Other trails follow the rim of the gorge through dense woods and over a historic dam. I’m looking forward to spring and to doing some more exploring in this picturesque area of upstate New York.
